Program overview

The program is developed for current and potential police, correction and private security officers with little or no formal education in management areas as potential participants. Management Development Certificate Program for Police Services will provide you with knowledge and skills that will enhance your managerial competencies and advanced theory and concepts that will strengthen their leadership potential. The program will also be made available to members of the public that determine that this program fits their continuing professional development needs.

The wide range and potentially diverse group of participants will create a vibrant learning environment that will expose you to a wide variety of case studies and experiences. Participants must have a minimum of a grade 12 education with several years work experience.

Program features

The approach for the design of the Management Development Certificate Program for Police Services involves several units of the Faculty of Extension to jointly design a comprehensive program providing the participants with a wide range of choice in electives as well as a core set of required courses. Working in close collaboration with the emerging needs of Law Enforcement, a program can be designed to provide a comprehensive management development education that will have a wide variety of streams to allow participants to focus on areas of interest or need.

Program requirements

Required courses

39 instructional hours in each course. Complete five of six:

  • Community Policing: Roles and Responsibilities
  • Ethics for Business and the Professional
  • Human Resources Foundations
  • Interpersonal Communications in Business
  • Introduction to Business Management
  • Organizational Behaviour

Elective courses

Complete a minimum of 117 hours of Elective Credit:

Enrolling in the program

Admission requirements

You are eligible for admission into the program if you meet the specified requirements. If you do not meet all the admission requirements of a program you are still invited to apply for admission.

  • High School Diploma
  • Several years of work experience in the policing sector
  • English Language Requirements:
    • Proficient in reading and writing English

Enrollment procedure

  1. Submit a completed image Application For Admission form. Please indicate into which program you are entering.
  2. Submit a one-time only, non-refundable $75.00 admission fee.
  3. Submit a completed image Course Registration form indicating course selection. The Application for Admission and the Course Registration may be submitted together.
  4. All applications must be accompanied with a high school OR post-secondary education transcript. If you attended a high school in Alberta, transcripts may be ordered from Alberta Education at 780.427.5732; if you attended high school outside of Alberta, contact the provincial department of education.

Graduation

The Certificate Program Graduation is held in June to honour students who have completed the requirements for a University of Alberta Certificate by the conclusion of the winter term. When registering for your final course , please ensure you complete the image Graduation Application and submit it to the Business Certificate Program's Office no later than March 1.

Students must achieve a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.0 to earn a certificate. Students graduating from a Business Certificate Program with a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or more will graduate "With Distinction."
