Opening Reception of Women's Words: Summer Writing Week 2006

Featuring Readings by: Lorna Crozier, Lorie Miseck and Kerry Mulholland

Lorna Crozier is one of Canada's most acclaimed poets. She has been called "a poet to be grateful for" by Margaret Laurence. Her ten volumes of poetry include the Governor General Award winner Inventing the Hawk. Her latest book of poetry is Whetstone.

Lorie Miseck and Kerry Mulholland were students at the first Summer Writing Week 13 years ago. Lorie's most recent book, A Promise of Salt, won the Wilfred Eggleston award for non fiction and was a finalist for the Writer's Trust of Canada Pearson's Prize and the City of Edmonton Book Prize. She is also author of one poetry collection, the blue not seen, which was finalist for the Henry Kreisel Award for Best First Book in the Alberta Book Awards.

Kerry Mulholland's poems have been published in anthologies and periodicals. Her words were featured on the cover of this year's Women's Words brochure.

Women's Words is a much-anticipated program. Some of Edmonton's finest instructors, combined with a dynamic and passionate community of women writers, come together to make Summer Writing Week a very creative and productive experience for everyone involved.

Why Editors Matter: The Role of the Editor in a Civil Society

Everyone is welcome to attend the free literary readings at the opening reception of Women's Words: Summer Writing Week 2006. Lorna Crozier, one of Canada's most acclaimed poets, is special guest reader. The reception takes place at the U of A Faculty of Extension on Friday, June 2, 7 to 9 p.m. in Room 2-36, University Extension Centre, 8303-112 Street. For more information, call 492-9448.

"A Decade of Editing: Making Our Mark in Alberta" The Prairie Provinces Branch of the Editors' Association of Canada is celebrating their 10th anniversary. A lively panel discussion is organized with special guests Rosemary Tanner, an Ontario science book editor and past president of EAC; Jill Wright, office of the mayor of Edmonton; and Linda Goyette, writer in residence, Stanley Milner Library Reception to follow.
