Marco Adria

Marco Adria is Professor of Communications and Co-Chair, Centre for Public Involvement, University of Alberta.

Research Interests

I collaborate with other researchers examining the methods, purposes, and outcomes associated with innovations in public involvement.

Biography

I teach seminar courses for graduate students on the theory and practice of public involvement and public deliberation and supervise master’s and doctoral students in communications and technology. In 2011, I received the Lewis Mumford Award for Outstanding Scholarship in the Ecology of Technics from the Media Ecology Association, for my book Technology and nationalism (McGill-Queen’s University Press). I am the author or co-author of many publications in the areas of organizational communication, popular culture, and nationalism, including three books, and have served as President of the Canadian Association of Library Trustees and Chair of the Edmonton Public Library Board. My Ph.D. is from the Aston University Business School in Birmingham, U.K.

Adria, M. (1994). Peter Gzowski: An electric life. Toronto: ECW Press. Published in large print in 1996. This book, a biography, was favourably reviewed in the Globe and Mail on 18 February 1995 and The Literary Review of Canada of March 1996. It follows the important events in the life of Mr. Gzowski and provides a social context for his approach to broadcasting and media, especially in relation to the rise of Canadian nationalism.

Adria, M. (1990). Music of our times: Eight Canadian singer-songwriters. Toronto: Lorimer. Published in both paperback and hardcover. This book profiles the written and recorded work of such artists as Bruce Cockburn, Leonard Cohen, and Joni Mitchell. The book examines the role of these artists in contributing to Canadian social and cultural life. The book was in featured in coverage on MuchMusic, CBC Newsworld, the CBC Television News, and CTV.
